Wood Frog

Cambryn:" ". . . In spring, wood frogs head for nearby ponds to find mates." Mom what's a mate?"

Me: "Uhm it is like a husband or wife for animals."

Jay: "Hey mate." to me

Cambryn: " "oh. " A male frog puffs out is throat and makes loud croaking noises. A female hears the croaks and finds the male."

Jay: "Maybe I should croak."

Cambryn: " To mate with the female, the male clasps her from behind."

Here I show Jay the picture in the book of the male frog on top of the female clasping her.

Cambryn: " "Then the female lays thousands of eggs in a clump of jelly, and the male fertilizes the eggs. " Mom, what does fertilizes mean?"

Me: "It means the boy makes the eggs be babies. Uhhhh, it just means they are husband and wife."

Me sweating trying to think of a better more accurate way to explain without leading to other questions.

Cambryn clearly satisfied with my answer.

Cambryn: "Mom, yum don't you want to eat that jelly? I loooove jelly. . . "

Thank goodness Cambryn doesn't watch discovery channel or National Geographic.
